What is Subaru X-Mode?

Subaru X-Mode is an advanced form of all wheel drive (AWD). Typically, all wheel drive works by using sensors to detect when a wheel loses traction, then redirects engine power to the wheels that have the most traction. This allows the slipping wheel to regain grip and keeps the car moving smoothly. All wheel drive is a powerful tool, but it isn’t always enough to get drivers out of a slippery predicament. Subaru X-Mode uses sensors to learn when wheels are losing traction, just like all wheel drive, but it also makes changes to other components of the vehicle.

There are two different versions of Subaru X-Mode. Single-mode X-Mode comes with a snow/dirt setting. Dual-mode X-Mode comes with a Snow/Dirt setting as well as a deep snow/mud setting.

How does Subaru’s X-Mode work?

In addition to the basic AWD system, single-mode X-Mode’s snow/dirt setting changes multiple vehicle components to help improve grip and regain control of the car:
  • Reduces throttle response to cut town on wheel spin and increase grip.
  • Releases engine torque in order to maintain forward momentum.
  • Restricts the car’s transmission to a lower gear ratio.
  • Forces the limited slip differential to react quicker.
Single-mode X-Mode also includes hill descent control. Hill descent control automatically controls the throttle and brakes which allows drivers to focus on steering. However, this setting only works up to 12 mph.

Dual-mode X-Mode does all the above when the snow/dirt setting is activated. Dual-mode X-Mode also has access to the deep snow/mud setting, which allows for some wheel spin in order to maintain forward momentum in more extreme conditions. Both versions of X-mode are activated by pressing a button on the console or by tapping on the infotainment touchscreen.

When Should you use Subaru X-Mode?

Subaru X-Mode should be used when your vehicle may need an extra bit of traction to safely maneuver the car. Subaru X-Mode is deactivated once you reach 18 mph, making it most useful in low-speed situations. It is most beneficial when driving on steep grades with low traction, such as icy or snowy roads. Dual-mode X-Mode gives an extra boost of control when you need to push through deep snow and mud in order to drive during less ideal road conditions. Dual-mode is most beneficial to drivers that experience more extreme weather or need to do some mild off-road driving.

Which Vehicles have the Subaru X-Mode Option?

Many newer Subarus come with Subaru X-Mode. Single-mode X-Mode is available on all Subaru AscentCrosstrekForester, and Outback models equipped with a continuously variable transmission (CVT). Dual-mode X-Mode is available on the Crosstrek Sport, Forester Sport, and Outback Onyx Edition XT.

Is Subaru X-Mode Good in the Snow?

Subaru X-Mode performs very well in low-speed and low-traction situations. This makes X-Mode ideal for snowy, icy, or wet conditions. Single-mode X-Mode is ideal for the type of winter weather common in the Torrington area.

Is Subaru X-Mode worth it?

Subaru X-Mode is worth it because of the confidence it gives drivers. You will not have to worry if your car can handle snow and ice in the winter, or dirt and gravel during summer camping trips. Single-mode X-Mode gives stability and traction in the most common low-traction situations. Cars with dual-mode X-Mode are worth it for drivers that experience more extreme weather or need to do mild off-road driving on a regular basis.
